Selfhood and the art of rolling over...

Tressan just smiled at himself in the mirror for the first time! He has smiled at my mirror image for a few weeks now, but he sometimes seems a bit confused.. if she's there, who is holding me? (is what I imagine him thinking)...

By all accounts he won't have a true sense of self (as separate from others, as possessing independent goals/emotions/knowledge) for months to come but it was still mighty cute to see him notice himself. He also is spending lots of time trying to figure out how to work those odd things on the ends of his arms. Mostly this results in him hitting himself in the face or waving his fists like a boxer doing tai chi.

Yesterday he rolled from tummy to back for the second time (the first time, a few days earlier, there was something in the way so it wasn't a complete roll). We are trying to be good about giving him "tummy time" to strengthen his back and neck.  He is not a big fan of tummy time, but he raises up high with his arms, and when he lets go with one... whoosh, he rolls over!  Mission accomplished. I have a feeling this will become a favorite trick in the weeks ahead.
